Summary of Contents
- Page 1: Blue universal thermostat with automatic heat/cool changeover option. Installation and operating instructions for model: 1F85CA-0471, 1F85-0471, 1F83-0471. Save these instructions for future use. Failure to read and follow all instructions could cause personal injury and/or property damage. Thermostat application guide includes various system types such as heat pump, gas or oil heat, and electric furnace. Electrical rating: battery power from mV to 30 VAC, NEC Class II, 50/60 Hz or DC. Setpoint range is 45° to 90°F (7° to 32°C). Operating ambient temperature is 32° to +105°F (0° to +41°C). This product does not contain mercury, but may replace a product that does. For proper disposal of products containing mercury, refer to the appropriate recycling resources.
- Page 2: Installation Thermostat installation and all components of the control system shall conform to Class II circuits per the NEC code. A standard heat/cool thermostat consists of three basic parts: the cover, the base, and the switching subbase. Before removing wires from the old thermostat, label each wire with the terminal designation from which it was attached. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat one at a time. Do not let wires fall back into the wall. For best results, replace all batteries with new premium brand alkaline batteries such as Duracell or Energizer. If the home is going to be unoccupied for an extended period, the batteries should be replaced before leaving. Leveling is for appearance only and will not affect thermostat operation. Push excess wire into the wall and plug the hole with a fire-resistant material to prevent drafts from affecting thermostat operation. Refer to equipment manufacturers’ instructions for specific system wiring information. After wiring, see the configuration section for proper thermostat configuration.
- Page 3: Wiring diagrams provide essential information for heat pump connections. Heat pump type 1 features a single stage compressor system with gas or electric backup. Heat pump type 2 includes a multi-stage compressor or two compressor system with gas or electric backup. Refer to the installer configuration section for proper thermostat configuration after wiring. If a heat pump system is not present, consult figures 4-6 for guidance. Equipment manufacturers’ instructions should be referenced for specific system wiring information. The thermostat can be configured for various heat pump systems. This thermostat is designed to operate a single-transformer or two-transformer system. Single stage systems can be gas, oil, or electric, while multi-stage systems can also be gas, oil, or electric. Figures illustrate single stage or multi-stage systems with single or two transformers.
- Page 4: Thermostat quick reference Home screen description Displays the power level of the 2 “AA” batteries. “Change” indicates batteries are low and should be replaced. “System On” indicates when heating or cooling stage 1 is energized. “Hold” is displayed when the thermostat is in the Hold mode. “Change Filter” is displayed when the system has run for the programmed filter time period. Displays System Mode (Heat, Emer, Auto, Cool, Off). Displays Fan Mode (On, Auto) or “Run Sched” in Menu Mode. Displays “Save” when Cool Savings is working. Displays “Heat Pump” when system is configured as Heat Pump thermostat. “Call For Service” indicates a fault in the heating/cooling system.
- Page 5: Installer/configuration menu allows access to various settings. Press the Menu button for at least 5 seconds to enter the menu. Selects multi-stage, heat pump, or single stage operation. Gas setting controls the blower via the furnace. Electric setting allows the thermostat to control the blower. Selects cool savings value from 1 (low) to 6 (high). Energy management recovery can be turned on or off. Adjustable anticipation settings for heating and cooling cycles. Compressor lockout time can be configured. Display light can be turned on or off.
- Page 6: Installer/configuration menu This control can be configured for various system types including multi-stage systems and heat pumps. Selecting compressor lockout CL ON will cause the thermostat to wait 5 minutes between cooling cycles to protect the compressor from short cycling. Select gas or electric fan operation based on how the heating system energizes the fan. Select Cool Savings value to adjust the amount of energy-saving adjustment in cool mode. System mode configuration allows for various settings including heat and cool, auto changeover, and heat only. Select backlight display to improve visibility in low lighting conditions. Temperature display adjustment allows you to change the room temperature display by up to 4°. Select temperature limit range to set maximum heat or minimum cool temperature for the setpoint range. Energy management recovery enables the thermostat to start heating or cooling early to reach the program setpoint. Select automatic schedule to program desired comfort temperatures into all program periods.
- Page 7: Comfort Alert with Active Protection allows the thermostat to identify fault codes and turn the compressor off to prevent damage. Select Filter Replacement Reminder to set a time period for changing or cleaning the air filter. Select Reversing Valve Output to accommodate heat pump applications by setting the O/B option. Select Daylight Saving Time Calculation to automatically adjust the Real Time Clock display. Choose the Fan Setting (Auto or On) to control when the fan operates. Manual Operation allows you to select Heat or Cool and adjust the temperature as needed. The HOLD feature bypasses the program and maintains the set temperature continuously. Auto Changeover allows the thermostat to automatically select heating or cooling based on indoor temperature. Program Override temporarily adjusts the temperature setting for four hours. Set Current Time and Date by navigating through the display to input the correct hour, minutes, and date.
- Page 8: PROGRAMMING (For Programmable Model Only) Repeat steps 2 through 8 until all of the program times and temperatures are set for all program periods on that day. Enter the Heating Program Press SYSTEM button to select “Heat” in the system switch area indicating the active mode being programmed. When programming is complete and all of the times and temperatures match your desired heating schedule, press Run Schedule. The thermostat will now run your program. Enter the Cooling Program Press SYSTEM button to select “Cool” in the system switch area indicating the active mode being programmed. The programmable thermostats are programmed with the energy saving settings shown in the table below for all days of the week. The Heating and Cooling Program schedules below allow you to pencil in your own program times and temperatures. In Heating, lower temperatures will save energy. In Cooling, higher temperatures will save energy. If you plan on using Auto Changeover, do not program the heating higher than the cooling.
- Page 9: Troubleshooting Reset operation When the thermostat is reset, installer configuration menu settings and programming will reset to factory settings. If a voltage spike or static discharge blanks out the display or causes erratic thermostat operation, you can reset the thermostat by removing the wires from terminals R and C. Be sure to review the installer configuration menu settings. To reset the programming, clock, and configuration settings, press and the FAN button simultaneously. Common problems include blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, furnace power switch to OFF, and loose connections. For no heat, check if the pilot light is lit and if the furnace lock-out condition is present. If the thermostat does not click after being reset, contact your heating and cooling service person for a replacement. For cooling issues, set the thermostat to COOL and lower the setpoint below the room temperature. Thermostat thermometer setting requires adjustment; it can be adjusted +/- 4 degrees. The location of the thermostat and/or the size of the heating system may influence the cycle rate.
- Page 10: Troubleshooting Comfort Alert Codes The Comfort Alert diagnostics product monitors the air conditioning outdoor systems with single phase Copeland Scroll compressors. Abnormal system and electrical conditions are indicated by flashing ALERT codes on the yellow LED on the Comfort Alert module. The Comfort Alert compatible thermostat displays “Call For Service” that flashes at the same rate as the yellow LED on the Comfort Alert module. 1 Flash - Long run time 2 Flash - System pressure trip 3 Flash - Short cycling 4 Flash - Locked rotor 5 Flash - Open circuit 6 Flash - Open start circuit 7 Flash - Open run circuit 8 Flash - Welded Contactor 9 Flash - Low voltage
