White-Rodgers 1E78 Non Programmable Heat Only Thermostat User Manual Overview

Summary of Contents

  • Page 1: Preparations Assemble tools required as shown below. Failure to follow and read all instructions carefully before installing or operating this control could cause personal injury and/or property damage. Thermostat details Caution: To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage, disconnect electric power to system at main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation is complete. Removing old thermostat Remove old thermostat: A standard heat/cool thermostat consists of three basic parts: the cover, the base, and the switching subbase. Shut off electricity at the main fuse box until installation is complete. Ensure that electrical power is disconnected. Identify each wire attached to the old thermostat using the labels enclosed with the new thermostat. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat one at a time. Do not let wires fall back into the wall. Install new thermostat using the following procedures.
  • Page 2: CAUTION: Take care when securing and routing wires to avoid shorting to adjacent terminals or the rear of the thermostat. This product does not contain mercury, but may replace a unit that does. Do not open mercury cells and handle any spilled mercury with care. Mercury must not be discarded in household trash. Attach thermostat base to wall by removing packing material and connecting wires beneath terminal screws. Do not use on circuits exceeding specified voltage to avoid damage and hazards. Thermostat installation must conform to Class II circuits per the NEC code. This thermostat requires 2 “AAA” alkaline batteries to operate. The factory default setting is for forced air heat, but it can be adjusted for hydronic heating systems. Clipping jumper W905 on the circuit board will produce a longer heating cycle for hydronic systems.
  • Page 3: Check thermostat operation to prevent static discharge problems. Contact a qualified service person if the system does not operate properly. Move the system switch to the heat position and ensure the pilot is lit if applicable. Adjust the thermostat setting above room temperature to start the heating system. Adjust the thermostat setting below room temperature to stop the heating system. Familiarize yourself with the thermostat features, display, and button operations. The thermostat consists of a body and a base, which can be removed and replaced. The display shows the current temperature and indicates low battery status. Temperature display adjustment can be made within a 3° range to match an old thermostat. The display backlight improves visibility in low lighting conditions.
  • Page 4: Setpoint temperature range: 45°F to 90°F (7°C to 32°C). Operating ambient temperature range: 32°F to 105°F. Operating humidity range: 0 to 90% RH (non-condensing). Shipping temperature range: -40°F to 150°F. Electrical rating: 0 to 30 VAC 50/60 Hz. or D.C. For optimum performance, replace batteries once a year with fresh “AAA” alkaline batteries. Common problems for no heat include blown fuse, tripped circuit breaker, and pilot light not lit. Diagnostic: Set SYSTEM switch to HEAT and raise the setpoint above room temperature. If the thermostat does not click after being reset, contact your heating and cooling service person. The location of the thermostat may influence the cycle rate.
