• Page 3: The heating system will not work if a timeswitch or programmer has switched it off. Set the room thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and leave it alone. Start with a low temperature, such as 18°C, and increase it by one degree each day until comfortable. Any adjustment above the comfortable setting will waste energy and increase costs. A boiler with radiators typically has one room thermostat for the whole house. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) can allow for different temperatures in individual rooms. Choose a reasonable temperature for the whole house if TRVs are not installed. If TRVs are present, set a slightly higher temperature for colder rooms and adjust TRVs to prevent overheating. Room thermostats require a free flow of air and should not be obstructed by curtains or furniture. Nearby electric fires and appliances may interfere with the thermostat's operation.
