  • Page 2: Installation and user guide Safety To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage, disconnect electric power to system at main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation is complete. To prevent compressor and/or property damage, if the outdoor temperature is below 55°F, do not operate the cooling system. Failure to read and follow all instructions carefully before installing or operating this control could cause personal injury and/or property damage. This information is intended for use by individuals possessing adequate backgrounds of electrical, mechanical, HVAC and experience. Attention: Mercury notice. This product does not contain mercury. However, this product may replace a product that contains mercury. Live electrical components! During installation, testing, servicing, and troubleshooting of this product, it may be necessary to work with live electrical components. Do not use on circuits exceeding specified voltage. Higher voltage will damage control and could cause shock or fire hazard. Do not short out terminals on gas valve or primary control to test. Short or incorrect wiring will burn out thermostat and could cause personal injury and/or property damage.

Avoid exposing the 102 to heat radiated from lamps, sunlight, fireplaces, or any other radiant heat source.
  • Page 4: Installation and user guide Record color and terminal marking of each wire. Disconnect the wires from the existing thermostat being careful not to allow them to fall back into the wall. Remove the existing thermostat from the wall. Move thermostat body over hole in wall and mark mounting hole locations on wall using base as template. Connect wires to terminal block on base using appropriate wiring diagram. Push excess wire into wall and plug hole with a fire resistant material to prevent drafts from affecting thermostat operation. Two “AAA” alkaline batteries are included in the thermostat at the factory with a battery tag to prevent power drainage. Do not exceed the specification ratings. All wiring must conform to local and national electrical codes and ordinances. To replace batteries, set system to OFF, remove thermostat cover from wall and install the batteries in the bottom of the thermostat.

  • Page 9: Trane XR102 non-programmable thermostat overview Before using your thermostat, familiarize yourself with its features, display, and the location/operation of the buttons and switches. Thermostat operation The thermostat buttons and switches include an up arrow to raise the temperature setting and a down arrow to lower it. The fan switch has options for ON and AUTO. The system switch has settings for COOL, OFF, and HEAT. The display indicates the system switch position and shows the current temperature. A flashing display indicates the compressor is in lockout mode. The display shows the currently set temperature, which is blank when the system switch is in the OFF position. A low battery indicator appears when the AAA batteries are low and should be replaced. If the house will be unoccupied for an extended period, install new batteries before leaving.
  • Page 10: Installation and user guide Operating features You can enter both your heating and cooling setpoints at the same time. Press or until the display shows the temperature you want. The factory default setting is Fahrenheit. If the 2 “AAA” alkaline batteries are low, the display will be blank except for a low battery indicator. Your new thermostat has been accurately set in the factory. You may adjust your new thermostat temperature display to match your old thermostat. The display backlight improves display contrast in low lighting conditions. Selecting backlight ON will turn the light on for a short period of time after any button is pressed. The display will alternately show to change “FF” to “ON.” Move the SYSTEM switch to OFF to exit the feature.
  • Page 11: Installation and User Guide Troubleshooting Reset Operation If a voltage spike or static discharge blanks out the display or causes erratic thermostat operation, you can reset the thermostat. For best results, replace batteries once a year with new premium brand alkaline battery. No Heat/No Cool/No Fan Common problems include a blown fuse, tripped circuit breaker, or a loose furnace blower compartment door panel. If the thermostat does not click after being reset, contact your heating and cooling service person or place of purchase for a replacement. Digital thermostats may cycle faster than older mechanical models, which means they turn on and off more frequently. The location of the thermostat and/or the size of the heating system may influence the cycle rate. Thermostat thermometer setting requires adjustment; the thermometer can be adjusted +/- 3 degrees. A blank display may indicate a voltage spike or static discharge, or that a battery change is required.
