  • Page 4: Digital heat/cool thermostat displays temperature in ˚F or ˚C. Room temperature is normally displayed, with an option to view outdoor temperature. Heat and cool mode icons are shown during auto mode. The flame flickers during a heat call, while the snowflake flashes during a cool call. The set-point icon indicates the active set point for day or night. The thermostat displays the current mode when changing settings. Users can select between heat, cool, auto, and off modes. The fan can be set to continuous or auto mode. Set points can be adjusted to either day or night preset values. Users can switch between ˚F and ˚C by pressing both buttons simultaneously.
  • Page 5: Getting familiar with the Aprilaire thermostat The LCD normally shows the room temperature, the current mode of operation, if the Day or Night temperature setting is being used, and if the system fan is set for continuous operation. Room temperature can be displayed in either degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius. Press the DECREASE button and INCREASE button simultaneously to switch between ˚F and ˚C. Three modes of operation are available: Heat, Cool, and Off. With the Models 8534 and 8538, “AUtO” mode is available. The mode of operation indicates how you want your heating and cooling equipment to operate. Press the MODE button until the desired mode of operation shows on the display. The thermostat stores four temperature settings in its memory, two for heating and two for cooling. The two temperatures for each mode are called the Day setting.
  • Page 6: The day setting is intended for occupied or comfort use, while the night setting is for unoccupied or energy savings. Pressing the DAY/NIGHT button allows for an instant change to a more economical setting. The thermostat can store four settings in memory. The system fan operates automatically during heating or cooling cycles. To run the fan continuously, press the FAN button. An icon will appear on the display when the fan is set to run continuously. The outdoor button functions with the optional Aprilaire Model 8041 Remote Outdoor Sensor. Without the Remote Outdoor Sensor, two dashes will appear on the display when the outdoor button is pressed. The thermostat is equipped with accessory inputs for automatic switching between day and night set points. Contact your installing contractor for more details on accessory inputs.
  • Page 7: Setting up the Aprilaire thermostat involves ensuring accurate temperature control by following simple guidelines. When the thermostat is operating, close the cover to allow proper air circulation over the temperature sensor. Do not place anything that can give off warm or cool air near the thermostat. There are two heat temperature settings: the Day setting and the Night setting. Press the MODE button until HEAT appears on the display. Press the DAY/NIGHT button until the Day setting icon appears on the display. Use the DECREASE and INCREASE buttons to adjust the setting. Refer to Figure 2 for adjusting heat settings.
  • Page 8: Adjusting the Cool Temperature Settings involves two settings: Day and Night. The Day setting is indicated by a sun icon on the display. The Night setting is indicated by a partial moon icon on the display. To adjust the settings, press the MODE button until COOL appears on the display. Use the DECREASE and INCREASE buttons to adjust the temperature settings. Press the DAY/NIGHT button to switch between Day and Night settings. Refer to Figure 3 for visual guidance on adjusting cool settings. The display will show the corresponding icon for the selected setting. Ensure to adjust both Day and Night settings as needed. Follow the instructions carefully for optimal temperature control.
  • Page 9: Operating the Aprilaire thermostat Select the mode of operation by repeatedly pressing the mode button until the desired mode appears on the display. The heating and cooling system may be turned off by selecting the “OFF” mode. Do not set to the “OFF” mode during periods when freezing temperatures may occur. In the “COOL” mode a snowflake icon appears on the display, which flashes when the air conditioning is running. In the “HEAT” mode a flame icon appears on the display, which flickers when the furnace is running. In the “AUTO” mode, the heating and cooling system will operate in either the “HEAT” or “COOL” mode depending on which current setting the room temperature is closest to. Both the snowflake and flame icons appear on the display in “AUTO” mode.
  • Page 10: Select the temperature setting to be used by pressing the DAY/NIGHT button until the desired previously stored temperature setting appears on the display. Use the DECREASE button and INCREASE button to change the temperature if desired. If changed, the new set point will be permanently stored in memory. After approximately 5 seconds, the thermostat will return to the normal display. This thermostat utilizes time delays to protect the heating and cooling equipment. If the equipment does not shut off or turn on immediately when the temperature setting has been changed, it may be due to the built-in time delays. Press the Fan button to run the fan continuously. A Fan icon will appear on the display when the fan is set to operate continuously.
  • Page 11: Changing the current temperature setting Press and release either the decrease button or increase button to see the current temperature setting. The thermostat remembers the most recent temperature settings. The cool temperature setting must be a minimum of 2°F higher than the heat temperature setting for both the day and night sets. The thermostat will automatically update the setting not being changed. Press the DAY/NIGHT button to instantly change the temperature setting to one of the two settings stored in memory.
  • Page 12: Optional feature – locking the keypad If tampering with the thermostat is expected and unwanted, the keypad can be locked by changing the position of the Keypad Lock DIP switch. The DIP switches are located inside the thermostat on the circuit board. In the locked position, only certain functions can be performed. The outdoor temperature button will display the outdoor temperature. The thermostat will default to the Day setting. The DECREASE button and INCREASE button will temporarily change the Day setting. The maximum change for the Day setting is 6°F for a period of 3 hours. If the thermostat does not respond when a button is pushed, it may be because the keypad has been locked. A Lock icon will appear when a button other than Outdoor is pushed if the keypad has been locked.
  • Page 13: In case of power failure, the thermostat does not require a battery. If the power goes out, the display is blank and the heating/cooling system will not operate. When power is restored, the thermostat defaults to the Day setting and the current mode of operation at the time of the outage. The thermostat has a continuous memory feature that retains the four programmed temperature settings regardless of the power outage duration. For cleaning, the thermostat can be cleaned with plain water or non-abrasive household cleaners. Care should be taken to avoid getting any cleaner into the interior of the thermostat. Cleaners should be sprayed onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the thermostat.
