  • Page 2: Installation and user guide Safety To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage, disconnect electric power to the system at the main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation is complete. To prevent compressor and/or property damage, if the outdoor temperature is below 55°F, do not operate the cooling system. Failure to read and follow all instructions carefully before installing or operating this control could cause personal injury and/or property damage. This information is intended for use by individuals possessing adequate backgrounds of electrical, mechanical, HVAC and experience. Attention: Mercury notice This product does not contain mercury. However, this product may replace a product that contains mercury. During installation, testing, servicing, and troubleshooting of this product, it may be necessary to work with live electrical components. Do not use on circuits exceeding specified voltage. Higher voltage will damage control and could cause shock or fire hazard.

The thermostat is designed for installation in climate-controlled living spaces. For proper temperature sensing, avoid exposing the thermostat to radiant heat sources. Select a location that prevents direct exposure to air currents from supply registers or ceiling fans. Mount the control on an interior wall section without hot or cold water pipes or duct work. The thermostat supports heating, cooling, and off modes. Fan modes available are auto and on. Input power options include 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries or 20-30 VAC. The operating temperature range is from 32°F to 105°F.
  • Page 4: Installation and user guide Record color and terminal marking of each wire. Disconnect the wires from the existing thermostat being careful not to allow them to fall back into the wall. Remove the existing thermostat from the wall. Pull the cover off the thermostat body. Forcing or prying on the thermostat will cause damage to the unit. Connect wires to terminal block on base using appropriate wiring diagram. Push excess wire into wall and plug hole with a fire resistant material to prevent drafts from affecting thermostat operation. Two “AAA” alkaline batteries are included in the thermostat at the factory with a battery tag to prevent power drainage. Do not exceed the specification ratings. All wiring must conform to local and national electrical codes and ordinances. This control is a precision instrument and should be handled carefully. Rough handling or distorting components could cause the control to malfunction. To replace batteries, set system to OFF, remove thermostat cover from wall and install the batteries in the bottom of the thermostat.

  • Page 9: American Standard 102 Non-Programmable Thermostat Before you begin using your thermostat, you should be familiar with its features, display and the location/operation of the thermostat buttons and switches. The thermostat buttons and switches include an up arrow to raise temperature setting, a down arrow to lower temperature setting, a fan switch (ON, AUTO), and a system switch (COOL, OFF, HEAT). The display shows the current temperature and indicates the system mode based on the position of the system switch. A non-flashing display indicates the system is in the COOL position, while a flashing display indicates the compressor is in lockout mode. The display will show when the AAA batteries are low and should be replaced. The currently set temperature is displayed unless the system switch is in the OFF position. If the display indicates low battery, new premium brand AAA alkaline batteries should be installed.
  • Page 10: Installation and user guide Operating features You can enter both your heating and cooling setpoints at the same time. Press or until the display shows the temperature you want. The factory default setting is Fahrenheit. If the 2 “AAA” alkaline batteries are low, the display will be blank except for a low battery indicator. When the batteries are low, pressing any button will cause the display to operate for ten seconds. Your new thermostat has been accurately set in our factory. You may adjust your new thermostat temperature display to match your old thermostat. The display backlight improves display contrast in low lighting conditions. Selecting backlight ON will turn the light on for a short period of time after any button is pressed.
  • Page 11: American Standard 102 Non-Programmable Thermostat Troubleshooting Reset Operation If a voltage spike or static discharge blanks out the display or causes erratic thermostat operation, you can reset the thermostat. For best results, replace batteries once a year with a new premium brand alkaline battery. No Heat/No Cool/No Fan (common problem) Blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Furnace power switch to OFF. Furnace blower compartment door panel loose or not properly installed. If the thermostat does not click after being reset, contact your heating and cooling service person or place of purchase for a replacement. Digital thermostats normally provide precise temperature control and may cycle faster than some older mechanical models. The location of the thermostat and/or the size of the heating system may be influencing the cycle rate. Thermostat thermometer setting requires adjustment. Voltage spike or static discharge may cause a blank display or unresponsive keypad.
