  • Page 2: Total comfort temperature management with Smart Response™ Technology. Congratulations on purchasing your new Honeywell thermostat. Keeps you comfortable by automatically calculating when the furnace or air conditioning should operate. Saves energy and money by adjusting the temperature when you leave home or go to sleep. Provides ultimate comfort and convenience with preprogrammed settings. This manual answers questions as you become familiar with your Honeywell thermostat. Read these instructions carefully to avoid damage or hazardous conditions. If replacing a control that contains mercury, do not dispose of it in the trash. Contact local waste management for recycling and proper disposal instructions. Typical location of a mercury switch in a thermostat.

  • Page 5: Prepare for installation. Check the compatibility chart to ensure the thermostat is compatible with your system. Table 1 outlines the compatibility with CT3500/CT3595 for various system types. Gas systems, oil-fired boilers, and electric systems have specific compatibility notes. Millivolt systems must be heating only and are not compatible with any 120/240 volt system. Package contents include the thermostat, wiring labels, wallplate, batteries, screws, anchors, and owner's manual. Tools required for installation are a screwdriver and a drill.
  • Page 6: Step 2: Remove old thermostat Test your heating and cooling systems to make sure they work properly. Turn off power to the system at the furnace or the fuse/circuit breaker panel. Carefully unpack your new thermostat and wallplate. Remove the cover from the old thermostat. Loosen the screw or screws holding the thermostat to the wallplate and lift the thermostat away. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat and attach the enclosed labels with the old terminal designation. Read this section if you are replacing specific types of thermostats. If you are replacing a Honeywell Chronotherm® Thermostat, do not allow the C or C1 clock terminals to touch. If there are six or more wires, this thermostat is not compatible with multistage systems.
  • Page 7: Replacing a thermostat that has three wires is applicable for heating only systems that can operate the fan using the fan ON switch. Some hot water (zoned) heating systems with three wires require an isolating relay for compatibility. To mount the thermostat wallplate, separate it from the thermostat and position it on the wall. Mark the two mounting holes for drilling. Drill holes in the wall based on the material, using anchors for support. Reposition the wallplate, pull the wires through the opening, and insert mounting screws. Leveling the wallplate is optional, as the thermostat functions properly even if not level. Tighten the mounting screws to secure the wallplate.
  • Page 8: Step 4. Wire wallplate terminals All wiring must comply with local codes and ordinances. If unsure about household wiring procedures, call your local heating/air-conditioning contractor. Refer to the labels you placed on the wires when you removed the old thermostat. Match the letter of your old thermostat wire with the corresponding terminal letter on your new thermostat. Remove the factory-installed jumper connecting terminals R and RC if wires are connected to both of those terminals. For wiring diagrams, if needed, see pp 21-22. Loosen the terminal screws. Slip each wire beneath its matching terminal. Plug the hole in the wall with insulation to help prevent drafts from adversely affecting thermostat operation.
  • Page 9: Terminal designations on old and new thermostats include R, Rc, W, Y, G, and O. Power connections are indicated for cooling and heating. Do not connect both O and B when wiring to a single stage heat pump. If both RH and R terminals are present, remove the jumper and connect accordingly. Batteries must be installed for programming and operation of the thermostat. Three AA alkaline batteries are included with the thermostat. Install the batteries with positive terminals pointing up. Follow the installation instructions carefully. Ensure proper connections to avoid issues with the heating/cooling system. Refer to the manual for detailed wiring instructions.
  • Page 10: If the thermostat is already mounted on the wall, remove the thermostat by placing your thumb between the thermostat and wallplate and pulling the thermostat up and away. When the batteries are running low, a REPL BAT message flashes for one to two months before the batteries run out completely. Replace the batteries as soon as possible once the message flashes. Although the thermostat has a low battery indicator, replace the batteries once per year to prevent leakage and to prevent the thermostat and heating/cooling system from shutting down due to lack of battery power. If you insert new batteries within 20 to 30 seconds of removing the old batteries, the system retains the current time and day. As a precaution when leaving home for longer than a month, change batteries before leaving to prevent the system from shutting down due to lack of power. Always use fresh alkaline batteries. The thermostat fan operation switch, labeled FUEL SWITCH is factory set in the F position. If your system is an electric heat system, set the switch to E. The E setting allows the fan to turn on immediately with the heating or cooling in a system where the G terminal is connected.
  • Page 11: Step 7. Mount the thermostat Engage tabs at top of thermostat and wallplate. Press lower edge of case to latch. Step 8. Customize your thermostat Your Honeywell thermostat comes preset to the most commonly used settings. You can change any or all of these settings. Always press the keys with your fingertip or a similar blunt tool. Sharp instruments like pens and pencil points can damage the keyboard. You now can change any of these settings.
